Dr. Buddy Mayo Retires

Dr. Buddy Mayo Retires

Dr. Herbert “Buddy” Mayo joined the School of Business in 1983 as a professor of finance. He is the author of two popular finance textbooks, Investments: An Introduction and Basic Finance: An Introduction to Financial Institutions, Investments and Management, both now in their twelfth edition.

Dr. Mayo studied economics at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and earned his PhD from Rutgers.

Throughout his time at The College of New Jersey he has not only inspired countless students, but through generous contributions, he has shaped the College as a whole. He started teaching his Student Investment Fund class in 2000 where students are afforded the opportunity to make investment decisions with actual capital. The fund is now valued at over $700,000. Dr. Mayo still comes back to talk to classes and participates in the student investment fund twice a week.

In 2011, the Mayo Entrepreneurial Endowment Fund was established in order to support the annual Mayo Business Plan Competition. Each year, teams of students from all disciplines submit original business plans and compete to win $60,000 of prize money.

An avid opera enthusiast, Dr. Mayo also established the Mildred and Ernest E. Mayo Concert Hall Fund in 2012, which supports the Performing Arts Series in the School of the Arts and Communication. “Remember and use the experience, and give back to the community,” said Dr. Mayo.

Nominated by his students, Poets&Quants listed Dr. Mayo as a top 40 undergraduate business professor in a 2017 publication.

Dr. Mayo says that his TCNJ experience was made memorable by working with the students and being in contact with many alumni. “I want students to participate in class and among themselves. Interaction is so important and  just talking to a bunch of mannequins would be really boring.”
